Sportz Power - 370 schools in 3rd edition of South Mumbai Junior Soccer Challenger
Posted : Mon, 10/10/2011 -

MUMBAI: The third edition of South Mumbai Junior Soccer Challenger 2011, a community soccer championship and talent hunt initiative by Milind Deora, was inaugurated here over the weekend by AIFF president Praful Patel.

Over 3,000 participants have registered from 370 schools of which 270 schools are government aided, for the event - a 5-A-Side format for South Mumbai schools for boys and girls between the ages of 8-10 years, 10-12 years and 12-14 years.

The championship was played out Saturday and Sunday at University Stadium, Marine Lines & the finals will be held on 15 October at Western Railways football ground at Lower Parel.

SMJSC will also serve as a talent hunt programme for Queens Park Rangers as 30 talented youngsters will be shortlisted for a coaching clinic that will be conducted by the club's coaching teams from UK. From this training camp, two youngsters will be selected for further training as part of the Queens Park Rangers Youth training programme in UK.

Speaking on this initiative Milind Deora, who is a Member of Parliament from South Mumbai constituency, said, “It is overwhelming to see the response to my initiative of building community soccer. Through this championship I aim at providing children an opportunity to showcase their skills and learn from experts.

"Be it a student from a municipal school or private school, talent and skill should be the only parameter to judge their potential. Inculcating sportsman spirit at a young age will help develop a healthy India. Kids need the right exposure and training in football to be able to compete with international challenges or represent India globally. With this championship we hope to give students an equal opportunity that they truly deserve.”

A brainchild of Milind Deora, the annual Milind Deora South Mumbai Junior Soccer Challenger was conceptualized with a view to unearthing talent at the grassroots level.

The tournament is being sponsored by Coca Cola India, Nirmal Lifestyle and is being partnered by Queens Park Rangers (QPR), part owned by NRI business tycoon Lakshmi Mittal. The event is organized by Saran Sports. SportzPower

Western Mail/Tim Lewis -
Swans’ Danny Graham aims to hit goal trail

DANNY Graham believes he was right to choose Swansea City over big-spending Queens Park Rangers – and he’s ready to repay the club with goals.

Graham could have been lining up against Swansea tomorrow if Brendan Rodgers hadn’t smashed the club record to bring the striker to the Liberty Stadium in June.

After 24 goals in the Championship last season, Graham was one of the most sought-after players outside the Premier League in the summer.

A host of clubs bid for the 26-year-old, including Neil Warnock’s QPR who had a £3m offer accepted, but Rodgers persuaded Graham he would be best suited to life in South Wales.

Graham was Swansea’s marquee signing of the summer at £3.5m, more than three times the £800,000 fee the club had paid for its previous record transfer Craig Beattie.

His former club Watford had given him permission to speak to QPR and Graham admits after talks with Warnock he thought hard about moving to the west London club.

Graham said: “I went to speak to QPR and I was tempted by them. They are obviously a club on the up and they have a lot of money to back that up.

“But, in terms of the football sense, I thought Swansea was better suited for me. I am a centre forward and can be a target man, but I like to play football as well.

“The way Swansea play football, they pass and move, and I thought it was better for my development as a player.

“I’m glad I joined Swansea City.”

QPR raided Swansea’s rivals Cardiff for striker Jay Bothroyd after missing out on Graham, but while the Swans’ striker has five goals in the Premier League, former City man Bothroyd has just two.

Graham says he is enjoying leading the line for Rodgers’ side, despite having to do a lot of hard graft on his own up front in the club’s last two away games at Newcastle and Everton.

Rodgers was the man who sorted the deal to take Graham to Watford back in 2009, but he left to take over as manager of Reading before ever working with the striker.

He also tried to sign Graham last January, but had to wait until the summer to finally get his man.

“Brendan was on the phone to me the morning after the play-off final,” revealed Graham, who started his career in the Premier League with Middlesbrough.

“He also tried to sign me before the window closed in January and he was also the person who set up the deal for me to go to Watford so he has shown how much he rates me as a player and how much he believes that I can come in and score goals.

“I have finally got the chance to work with him which is great. I’m loving every minute of it.

“I need to repay the faith that the gaffer has shown in me.

“To spend £3.5m is a heck of a lot of money for a club of the size of Swansea City. It’s no mean feat and smashed the club record by a couple of million pounds so I want to score goals to repay him.”

After a difficult start to the season, Graham now looks every inch a Premier League player as he leads the line for Swansea.

High-profile misses in the opening few games of the season, particularly ones against Sunderland and Arsenal, led some pundits to question whether he would be able to recreate his goal-scoring form from the Championship in the top flight.

But, once he broke his duck in the 2-0 win over Stoke at the start of October, he’s gone on to score four more goals for the Swans.

Graham has made his name as a striker who goes through hot streaks and he proved that once again with four in four games for Swansea.

His role in Rodgers’ 4-3-3 formation is not always the easiest, especially away from home when he can look isolated at times, but it is part and parcel of Swansea’s commitment to try and play passing, attractive, football despite being in their first season in the Premier League.

Graham added: “I was always confident I would score goals in this league. That’s not being arrogant or big-headed, it’s just about having belief in my ability. I’m sure every footballer has the same attitude. You need that.

“Most of my career I have played as the main striker. I played in a two and a one at Watford, and we played the same formation as here at Carlisle when we got to the play-offs. It worked and the 4-3-3 formation has always been one I’ve been fond of.

“Don’t get me wrong that at some points in a game as a striker you could do with the extra man up front, but the way that we pass and move and the fact the wingers are so quick means that some times you don’t need that.

“The style of football was the main factor for me coming here.”

Graham and Swansea will hope to get back among the goals tomorrow having gone two games without finding the net and they face a QPR side who are without a win in five games.

In contrast to Swansea’s fortunes, QPR’s best form has come away from home this season, as they’ve only won once at Loftus Road but have notched up three wins on the road.

That form will be tested against a Swansea side who have the best home record in the Premier League, with only one defeat and having conceded just two goals. Walesonline

Soccernet - Warnock targeting leaders
December 24, 2011

QPR manager Neil Warnock has highlighted a need to bring "leaders" to Loftus Road during the January transfer window.1

The club have endured a tumultuous campaign since their return to the Premier League, winning three times on the road but just once at home.

QPR currently lie two points above the relegation zone, in 16th spot, and Warnock has been vociferous in his need for new players, especially those that can shine during tough times.

"I don't think we have enough leaders," he said. "That is one department I am looking to bring players in. You can get leaders on the pitch and you can see certain players [which make you envious].

"We do have one or two here, but I probably have to look at using them a little more than I do. In the past it has always been a priority to check a player's character, but when you look at players at home and abroad it is impossible to do all your checks on every aspect of them. You go with your gut feeling really."

QPR's need for new blood and increased transfer funds have seen them linked to a host of players ahead of the window reopening.

Warnock does not expect any incoming players before the trip to Newcastle on January 15 and on Friday quashed speculation linking QPR with moves for Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard, Barcelona's Alexander Hleb and Fulham frontman Bobby Zamora.

When asked about the latter, Warnock said: "Are we not after Fulham striker Andy Johnson as well? I saw that one last week. It is not for me to talk about other people's players. I have got enough on my own plate trying to get players in.

"We are actively looking at bringing players in and we will bring players in, but it is not easy in January. You probably don't get your number one choice and you go onto your number two choice, etc.

"I don't know what choice I will get but I hope to bring one or even two forwards in and a couple of defenders. I don't know the specific numbers I am looking to sign because you don't know who becomes available.

"You can have your targets but they might be unrealistic so you have to have players as back-up that can do just as good a job if you can. We do need certain players for definite in certain areas."

While admitting he wants new players, Warnock was less forthcoming when asked about Adel Taarabt. The Morocco international has failed to shine since QPR's promotion and has been involved in a number of off-field incidents.

Taarabt has also been heavily linked with a move away from West London, with big-spending Paris St Germain mooted as a possible destination.

"I am just thinking whatever will be will be with Adel," Warnock said. "If we get an offer we can't turn down then I can use that money elsewhere, but if he continues how he has done the last two weeks it would be lovely for me.

"I like Adel. He has got to conform a little bit if he wants to stay and he has done the past couple of weeks so you never say never."

Asked what he was referring to, Warnock added: "In all walks of life you should turn up on time, shouldn't you? Whether you are a good player or a bad player, [you turn up on time].

"I don't have many issues with him. He is never going to be a trainer like Jamie Mackie, but Jamie is never going to be able to do things Adel can do, so that doesn't bother me, but you just have to be professional.

"Adel has let himself down a little bit this year but he is not on his own." Soccernet

DAILY MAIL/Laura Williamson
My wife picks my signings... but Swansea striker Graham got away, reveals Warnock

There's only one person prospective QPR signings need to impress in January – Neil Warnock's wife, Sharon.
The QPR boss says he always invites transfer targets round to his home in Richmond, south west London, so his other half can cast her eye over them.
Warnock said: 'I like my missus to see them. Women have got more idea about people.
'She gives them the once over and says: “I like him” or “I don't like him”. Or “Watch him, he didn't look you in the eyes.” She does all that.

Family man: Warnock takes prospective signings to meet his wife, Sharon (right)
'If I don't get the player I say: “That was down to you, love.”
'There have been a couple she's not liked - and she was right about them as well. It's woman's intuition.'
Striker Danny Graham passed Sharon's test last summer but QPR missed out on the 26-year-old as he opted to join Swansea City, Rangers' opponents on Monday.
Warnock said: 'She approved of Danny. She thought he was a nice lad.
'Everything was agreed, but he went to Swansea the next day because we couldn't buy him. It was disappointing but I wished him all the best. He's gone to a good club - he couldn't hang about for us any longer.

So near yet so far: Danny Graham came close to joining QPR
'We wanted so many (new players) and it didn't look like we were going to get any. I've never been so down.
'When you get promoted to the Premier League you should be on a high, but it was a disappointing time for me.
'Then (new majority shareholder) Tony (Fernandes) came in, but we're still playing catch-up really. Hopefully things will go well in January and that's what I should be judged on.'
The QPR manager's approach may seem slightly old-fashioned for a club buoyed by a new owner with money to spend in January, but Warnock insists he will stick to his tried and tested method.

In charge: Majority shareholder Tony Fernandes

'I will still speak to the players at my house,' he said. 'I would rather show them views of Richmond than our training ground! I've got more chance of selling the club that way.
'It’s an exciting time with all the plans for a new stadium, academy and the direction the board are taking and the commitment to the club. To come on board when we are just establishing ourselves is a great opportunity.
'The lure of London is also significant. At the moment it’s an exciting place to be.' Daily Mail

Christmas Greetings 2006 - QPR Official Site - December 25, 2006 - QPR RESPONSE TO DAILY EXPRESS
- QPR Official Site: Official Club statement by Antonio Caliendo and Gianni Paladini.
- We owe it to QPR fans to respond to the allegations made in the Daily Express on Saturday in an article entitled "Are Rangers Going bust?"
- The article was misleading in many respects and we can assure our many supporters that there is no possibility of QPR going bust whilst we remain on board.
- We have seen too many attacks on QPR in the press that simply don't reflect the reality of today's situation. It seems there is always someone who wants to discredit our club.
- Our goal remains the same as always: to take QPR to the highest position in English football. Despite injuries and recent results, we believe John Gregory will be able to take QPR back to the position it was in when he played for the Club.
We accept that talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words. We will only ever prove our critics wrong by taking the Club forward, and we are 100 per-cent committed to continuing with that.
- Finally, we would also like to take this opportunity to wish all of the staff and fans of QPR a very happy Christmas and a successful New Year.

QPR Report Correspondent MaudesFishnChips - Sunderland Fan Perspective - Colin Randell of Salut!Sunderland

Many thanks to Colin Randell, creator of Salut Sunderland - and, as always, Maudesfishnchips!

How long have you supported sunderland?

Pretty much all my life since boyhood in County Durham, - always a big catchment area for Sunderland - so a long time indeed. I did have a very brief flirtation with Peterborough United as a kid, when they were storming through the non-league and then lower reaches of the Football league, but otherwise Sunderland through and through.

How did you get to your blog? Has it evolved how you would of expected?

I started blogging when working for The Daily Telegraph in Paris, kept it - http://www.francesalut.com - as my own thing when made redundant and then launched Salut! Sunderland as an offshoot. It was a simple hobby at first but has grown in remarkable fashion and I am now quite proud of it even if it will never make me a proper income.

Who are sunderland’s biggest Rival (or Rivals) and why? (Have to ask!)

I cannot think of any. Hartlepool maybe or Darlington. Never even think about MiddlesBrough if that's who you had mind. Oh yes, there was another team, wasn't there? Len Shackleton once said:"I'm not biased when it comes too Newcastle United. I don't care who beats them."

Are you happy with your team and how things are to date? – What are your opinions on your new manager o'neil? and of steve bruce?his summer dealings?

Steve Bruce deserves credit for achieving a 10th top finish but has rightly been criticised for allowing top players, especially strikers, to slip out of the club without adequate replacement. He was also less than convincing in tactical
awareness and had little instinct for changing things effectively during games. Summer signings were a mixed bag but I do value some of the people he has brought to the club (not just in the summer), eg Sessegnon, Vaughan, Wes Brown (jury still out on O'Shea) and Westwood while Wickham and McClean are great prospects. That said, he was judged on results and they were abysmal, so I welcome O'Neill's appointment. He inherits a half-decent squad but has plenty of work to do.

What do you think of your current Owner? WHY is he involved? What do you expect from him?

I loathe corporate football but we're all stuck with it. Ours is no worse, indeed he is many times better, than most owners. He was right to give Bruce time to turn things around, right to sack him when no improvement seemed likely, right to be moving away fans to a less prominent position (where their empty seats won't make the ground look half empty!) and right to have the club's interests genuinely at heart.

How do you think sunderland treats its fans? Appreciates them? Listens to them? Screws them?

The usual mix of good and bad. Some excellent community initiatives, including cut-price deals for kids, decent involvement with the city and surrounding area - and contempt for independent voices of support (gripe, gripe). But that reflects football, not specifically SAFC.

Who are you Dangermen/Most valued/most overrated/most underrated players?

We have been unable to score goals, which is hardly surprising since we have one recognised Premier standard striker - Bendtner - and he is just on loan - and a couple of promising kids. A midfielder, Seb Larsson, is our top scorer and he is very dangerous from set pieces. Sessegnon has great skill. Our "Egyptian Beckham", Elmohamady, has been a huge disappointment.

Are you happy with your youth set up? Is your club doing enough to bring young/local talent through the ranks?

The Academy is good, has produced some real gems - Jordan Henderson, obviously, and now Ryan Noble - though the question throughout the English game is always whether promising youth can make it at the highest levels.

Who would you say was the greatest sunderland player that you yourself personally saw? And past player? (You can name more than one if it's that close!)

Charlie Hurley was incomparable at centre half, a rock in defence and always a threat at our corners. Brian Clough was a wonderful goalscorer, Jimmy Montgomery a fabulous keeper. For sheer pleasure, I will never forget the goalscoring of Kevin Phillips and the magical partnership with Niall Quinn that did so much to make it possible.

What is your prediction for sunderland this season?

I though we'd match or improve on last season (10th) but our dismal start has left a lot of ground to make up and we are not even out of the wood yet. I will stick my neck out and say, with hope in heart, 10th again. But it is a big ask.

Are you aware of any player or manager links between our two clubs past and present?

I am useless on these questions until it's too late, when they all come tumbling back. Does Venables refusing to come as manager count? Or my daughter having played for QPR Ladies, though just after the team that took part in Bend It Like Beckham?

What is your view and the general sunderland view of QPR and of Neil Warnock and our owners?

I have always quite liked QPR, especially living as I do in west London and even more especially since they are not Chelsea, for whom I have always had an irrational dislike. I have seen us win, lose and draw at Loftus Road. Warnock's a character; owners, as mentioned already, are owners. I cannot be too critical of what has happened at Man City and once (still?) looked like happening for you since we've had our wealthy saviours, too, and the fan who says he wouldn't want it for his club is probably a liar.

Who(if any) is your most memorable/favourite QPR Player over the years?

Always liked watching Rodney Marsh play, lovely mixture of swagger and skill.

Any memorable matches between our two clubs that stand out for you? And the reasons why?

1999, the year we took the second tier by storm. Remembered for Kevin Phillips coming back from injury and scoring a wonder goal, Kevin Ball being sent off wrongly (the card was rescinded), you taking a lead and Quinn heading an equaliser in the 100th minute of stoppage time. At least that's how I recall it.

Your score prediction for QPR v sunderland?

I'll be bold and say 1-0 to us, while fearing the worst

What, realistically, do you think sunderland are capable of achieving in the next five years?

If we meet the owner's target and establish ourselves as consistent top half finishers, with maybe a sniff at the League or FA Cup, that would suit me. Of course I'd love Champions League football, but I would never lose sleep about not being a top four club. Apart from when Peter Reid brought us seventh top two years running in the Premier, my best moments as a Sunderland fan have mostly been in promotion seasons.

QPR Report Q&A: Manchester United Fans Perspective: Ian Rimmer of Manchester United's Red Ranks

- Many thanks to Ian Rimmer of Manchester United's Red Ranks Interview Conducted by QPR Report's MaudesFishnChips

THE INTERVIEW

How long have you supported united? and why?

I've supported United since I was born, my Dad wouldn't have it any other way. He took me to my first games when I was about 5. After that I shared a season ticket with my older brother so we took it turns to go with my Dad. I started going home and away at the age of about 15 until I got in to my twenties when a few years of doing some serious ******** (it was the 90's!) meant I took a break from the game! I returned again home and away during the 2000's and now I concentrate my efforts on following the academy home and away instead, hence my write-ups on RedRants.com

*maude edit: 'partying' might be best

How did you get to your blog? Has it evolved how you would of expected?

Well, I was inspired to write a match report after last seasons FA Youth Cup win at Anfield, since then I've just carried on. I was asked to take over RedRants.com soon after, so now I do both and it's going well.

your views on the noisy neighbours!

I think they're proving that money really can change the course of history. Never in a million years would that shower have won a Carling Cup let alone an FA Cup without the Sheikhs billions......and to think they're in the Champions League too?! Astonishing!

Are you happy with your team and how things are to date? – What are your opinions of ferguson?his signings this summer and selling?

Happy? Of course, we're Man Utd, who wouldn't be happy? There are a few obvious issues that could perhaps get some of the more fickle fans moaning and groaning. For instance, we're a few men short in a few areas (CM, LB, RB and possibly even up front), The Glazers are crooked sharks, ticket prices are spiralling out of control and we'll soon be without Sir Alex.
On the up side though, we've made our best start to a Prem season EVER, we're unbeaten away from home (whereas last season at this point we hadn't even won a game on our travels), we've got some of the best young talent in the country playing in the first team, the reserves and in the academy and, if we despatch your boys on Sunday we'll be top of the league with the bitters playing Arsenal and staring down the barrel of an oh-so Manchester City-like slump-in-form after Monday nights defeat to Chelsea.

What do you think of your current Owner? WHY is he involved? What do you expect from him?

Greedy. Money. Nothing.

How do you think united treats its fans? Appreciates them? Listens to them? Screws them?

It depends what kind of fan you are. If you're one with plenty of cash to spend in it's megastore then yeah, I think it likes us. If you're one who likes to go for a few pre-match pints with your mates, get to the ground just in time for kickoff and sing a few derogatory songs at the away fans then no, I don't think they appreciate us at all.

Who are you Dangermen/Most valued/most overrated/most underrated players?

I think the danger man this Sunday will be the obvious, Wayne Rooney. Sorry to be so predictable but he loves his London aways and he's just kickstarted what most of us expect to be a glut of goals after an 8 game barren spell. I reckon our most valuable asset is probably either Nani or newly signed Phil Jones. As for value to the team then at the moment it's got to be Rio Ferdinand. His role is crucial in the absence of Vidic due to a lengthy ligament injury.

Are you happy with your youth set up? Is your club doing enough to bring young/local talent through the ranks?

The youth setup is superb. I think English football needs to find a format to develop 18-21 year old's after they finish in the academy. The reserves league is antiquated and in need of overhaul and doesn't continue to develop youth in the way the academy does. As for local talent then look out for names like Ravel Morrison, Keane (twins), Larnell Cole, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Zeki Fryers and Tom Thorpe over the next year or two. Each of those names (and others) were born in the city.

Who would you say was the greatest united player that you yourself personally saw? And past player? (You can name more than one if it's that close!)

Bryan. Robson.

What is your prediction for united this season?

League Title #20 and maybe a cheeky cup win to boot. To be honest, the title's the big one, because if we don't win it....I'm afraid Citeh might get their hands on it.......and I'd have to leave my job if that ever happened!

Are you aware of any player or manager links between our two clubs past and present?

I thought about this all day and apart from Kieran Lee who you took on loan a few years ago and Paul Parker signing for us in '91 then no, I can't think of any other links. I remember Denis Bailey scoring a hat-trick at Old Trafford on New Years Eve a great many years ago though.

What is your view and the general united view of QPR and of Neil Warnock?

Honestly? I see both as Championship material although you're both proving me wrong at the minute.

Who(if any) is your most memorable/favourite QPR Player over the years?

Andy Sinton stands out for me. On his day he could be really damaging.

Any memorable matches between our two clubs that stand out for you? And the reasons why?

Yes two, the one I mentioned on New Years day and the only trip I made to Loftus Road in the early nineties. Finished 0-0 though, terrible game. My only memory is standing at eye-level to the pitch.....strange ground.

Your score prediction for QPR v Manchester United?

I think we mean business for the next few weeks/months after our untimely Champions League exit so I can see a comprehensive but hard fought 3-1 win for us. Michael Carrick's due a goal and now he's finally ventured beyond the half-way line I predict a goal for him and a couple for Rooney.

What, realistically, do you think united are capable of achieving in the next five years?

That all depends how long Sir Alex continues for. It's a popular shout that when he finishes United will suffer a similar decline in form and success they suffered in the Post-Busby era, I think the next five years are all about ensuring that doesn't happen, regardless of who's in charge. In the meantime I honestly believe we can compete for most major honours and keep Liverpool off their perch and City as bitter and obsessed as ever.

Cheers

Ian.

NEXT: QPR vs Manchester United

QPR Report Poster and Moderator, HarlowRanger, produced this QPR vs Manchester United Preview for the QPR Report Messageboard. QPR Report poster and moderator, Bushman, supplied some additional photographs. For QPR (as for almost every club, Manchester United are one of - if not THE - biggest games of the season. Whereas for Manchester United, this is one of their lesser games, from which they just want to get three points!

QPR welcome Manchester United FC

Well , Alex Ferguson and Manchester United are on there way to Loftus Road !
Who would have thought that a few years ago ?

Surprisingly I expected to welcome them as Division leaders which is not the case this year , but this has be our biggest game to date doesn't it?

It certainly feels as big as Manchester City and Chelsea to me !

There has been many memorable encounters over the years but the 4-1 victory at Old Trafford on the 1st of January 1992 was very special indeed. .

That win being our only away victory in the 19 seasons we have faced each other .
The other five victories coming at Loftus road including two on the bounce in 1974 and 1975 .

Our previous League encounter being on the 16th March 1996 which was in the Premiership , the match at Loftus Road finished in a 1-1 draw with a late Cantona leveller!

We have only contested 38 League games over 19 seasons .
There has been 4 meetings in the FA Cup all of which the lost ,the closest coming to a result was in January 1989 when we drew 0-0 at Old Trafford in the 3rd round , drew 2-2 at Loftus Road in the replay before finally losing 3-0 in the second replay.

There was a futher loss in the League Cup in 2008 which was our most recent meeting and we played each other in the English Charity Shield in 1908 which we lost after a replay.

‘Cheat, cheat, cheat!’ – How Cantona’s late strike at QPR put United on course for the Double Double in ’96
Giles Oakley

In the shadow of Loftus Road

I’ve always enjoyed matches at Queens Park Rangers whose small, intimate stadium always creates a crackling atmosphere when United come to town.Loftus Road is only a block or so away from the BBC and many a time I have seen the floodlights gleaming enticingly in the distance over roof tops from offices at Television Centre.

The nearby White City Estate had quite a rough reputation in those days, entitling BBC staff to be escorted by security to nearby car-parks at night and I have seen a surprising number of violent incidents at QPR matches over the years. Nevertheless, the BBC sometimes used to hire office space within the stadium and I’ve often been to view rough cuts or approve fine-cuts in make-shift cutting rooms there.

Many of the terraced working class streets around Loftus Road are named after Boer War sites, such as South Africa Road and Bloemfontein Road which run right alongside the stadium. When I see them they always remind me of my Great Uncle Fred who died in that imperial war in 1901.

He was part of the force that took the city of Bloemfontein, where he played cricket for his regiment, the Shropshires against the Worcesters, top scoring and taking most wickets in the match. We Oakleys don’t forget our sporting triumphs. Tragically he died of enteric fever some weeks later when an untrained nurse who took a fancy to him gave him bunch of grapes, which finished him off.

When the War Office sent the family a telegram announcing his death they got his serial number wrong so in the next message they said he was alive. Unfortunately the first telegram was correct, as sadly confirmed in the third and final wire. I guess most people don’t think of such distant tragedies when going to a football match.

Kat and I got buses to Shepherds Bush but we got caught up in a huge traffic snarl-up and we were nearly late, missing our planned leisurely lunch. As we half-ran to Loftus Road we encountered straggly groups of United fans in the side streets chanting ‘Ooh Aah, Cantona’ songs with all the swaggering bravado of ten successive wins. We just got into our seats in the Ellerslie Road stand as the match kicked off.

Saturday 16 March 1996: QPR 1 Man United 1
In the first half United were vastly superior, creating chance after chance as one would expect of a team who had won their previous ten matches against a team who’d only won one in their last ten, and who were staring down the barrel of relegation. It seemed inconceivable that United would fail, especially with the incentive of going to the top of the table if they won or drew, with Newcastle not playing until Monday.

Equally, having played two more games than Newcastle a defeat would be a huge blow, perhaps fatal. As Andy Cole, David Beckham,Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane all missed good openings, Cole twice, I was beginning to get quite twitchy, worrying that it would be ‘one of those days’.

QPR had some good players, such as Danny Dichio, Simon Barker and today’s ever-popular favourite, the wholehearted Ian Holloway, now such a strong character as manager of Blackpool. Keane and Brian McClair were struggling to stem the tide in mid-field as Rangers passed the ball about purposively and I was getting very nervous, all my natural pessimism coming to the fore.

In the second half Rangers, who always tried to play thoughtful, constructive football, began to capitalise on some sloppy mistakes by United who began to look curiously lethargic. It was no real surprise when Rangers suddenly scored, Dichio netting with a powerful drive from the edge of the area after a perceptive pass from Holloway .

The United players looked stunned, if not affronted. They quickened the tempo in resonse and began pouring forward again, launching attack after attack, but they kept missing chances. On came United’s subs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Lee Sharpe. The silly errors still abounded but at least the urgency had returned, with even Schmeichel pushing forward now.

It was Rangers’ fans’ turn to get nervous. Their 1-0 lead looked very precarious and they were desperately whistling for the ref to blow for time. The gnarled old man next to me was getting more incensed by the second as the ref indicated with three fingers there were three minutes to go, when everyone thought we were already deep into injury time.

Then centre-back Steve Bruce powered into the opposition half, won the ball and fed it to Giggs who had burst forward for the umpteenth time, this time down the left. Giggsy lofted a perfect cross over to the far post where there was the inevitable figure of Eric Cantona to crash the ball into the net with controlled violence. Pandemonium, 1-1. The Rangers fans went absolutely berserk and some tried to get on the pitch, presumably to lynch the ref.

The police grappled the intruders to the ground, and hauled them off.
‘Cheat, cheat, cheat!!’
‘Cheat, cheat, cheat!!’ they chanted in frothing fury when the ref blew the final whistle moments later. Kat and I kept our heads down as the rage of anger swirled around us.

She had tentatively donned a United scarf at half-time when hostility levels were low, even in the heart of the QPR members’ stand. I think she actually liked it when the match boiled over.

Even as the players left the pitch with the boos ringing in their ears there was a near punch-up on the grass which got the QPR folk back on their feet in fury. None of it worried Kat as we left and she she commented that Mum would hate all the crowds and noise whereas she took after me and loved all the aggro.

I’d promised her I’d get her a United hat so we walked all round the ground inspecting the stalls selling scarves, bobble hats, badges, t-shirts and posters, ignoring the bitterly contorted faces of the aggrieved QPR fans.

She chose a Giggs poster and a discreet little red devil metal badge, then we hurried off while the QPR fans carried on their pointless ‘Cheat, cheat, cheat!’ screams at anyone in red & white. We just smiled to ourselves and made our escape.

United had rescued a vital point at the death, thanks to the great Eric Cantona, although given the heroic efforts of Bruce and Giggs in the build-up to the goal it was yet again evidence of that tremendous team spirit that was powering United back to the top. This was the first time United had been top of the table all season, and it was a huge psychological boost for the kids.

There were plenty more twists and turns in the run-in, but United now knew they had it in them to go for the big prizes. There was a growing feeling that the Double Double really was on again.
For me, it was a beautiful 50th birthday present. Kat and I went back home and got ready to party party for the rest of the night with friends and family. Not a bad way to reach your half century, with Manchester United top of the table, just as they are now, when I’m 65.

One sad footnote to this tale. QPR did get relegated in 1996, and have never returned to the top division. It would be terrific if they can finally get back up into the Premiership this season so we can resume battle in that right little, tight little stadium in Loftus Road. (Yes we did )

MANCHESTER UNITED 1, QUEENS PARK RANGERS 4

Wednesday 1st January 1992 - Barclays League, Division One
Dennis Bailey thrilled the live television audience with a glorious hat-trick as Rangers won at Old Trafford for the first time in their history.
This New Year's Day fixture kicked-off at 5.00pm to accommodate ITV's cameras. Manchester United topped the table that morning and ranked as 9/2 ON favourites to lift the title. Meanwhile, the Super Hoops were just below halfway, but had gone six games undefeated.

Against all the odds, the R's put on an invigorating performance and forged into an early 2-0 lead! After just three minutes, Roy Wegerle and Simon Barker combined to set up Andy Sinton for a powerful finish.

Barely two minutes later, Bailey held off a challenge from United's Clayton Blackmore and shot home from 15 yards via goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel's hands.
QPR's neat passing football and solid tackling continually troubled the home side. Bailey lashed over and Wegerle missed an open goal as the chances piled up.

Then on 59 minutes, Sinton tickled through an inviting pass which Bailey pounced upon and fired into the net in magnificent fashion.
Brian McClair pulled back a consolation goal for United on 82 minutes, but until then R's keeper Jan Stejskal had not been forced into making a save.

Bailey completed the scoring with five minutes to go, following up to tap home after Sinton's swerving drive was pushed onto the post by Schmeichel. This sealed United's worst home defeat since 1977.

Rangers boss Gerry Francis said afterwards: "It was a very good performance. But as Brian Moore said in the TV commentary, we are playing well enough to match anybody."
Bailey, a devout Christian, said: "This is a dream come true for me at Old Trafford. My first ever hat-trick and at a ground I have only ever been to once before. That was eight years ago when I was a fan supporting Tottenham in a Cup match.

"I could not quite believe what happened to me out there on the pitch against United. But I am convinced that I did it with God's assistance. God helped me do this - as he always helps me. I will be saying prayers of thanks for what has occurred here.

"I go to church - the Pentecostal in Brixton - every Sunday anyway, when I reflect on the week just passed. I am totally convinced that I always have God on my side.
"And because of my beliefs, I won't deride Manchester United now. Sure we hammered them and I enjoyed every moment of it, but you won't hear me rubbing it in."

United boss Alex Ferguson said: "That was just unbelievable and we got what we deserved. It was a lack of determination in clearing the ball and defending properly. We hadn't even got started when QPR were 2-0 up."

Manchester United: Schmeichel, Parker, Blackmore, Bruce, Pallister, Webb, Ince, Phelan (Giggs), McClair, Hughes, Sharpe.
QPR: Stejskal, Bardsley, Wilson, Wilkins, Peacock, McDonald, Holloway, Barker, Bailey, Wegerle, Sinton.
Attendance: 38,554.

QPR 3 Manchester United 0

A fine 3 - 0 victory by London Club Queens Park Rangers, newcomers to the English First Division, plunged the once mighty Manchester United deeper into trouble today (Tuesday, January 1). Before a big Bank Holiday crowd, Rangers produced some superb attacking football to keep their place among the top half dozen clubs in the First Division.

Manchester United, despite the half-million pounds spent by manager Tommy Docherty on new layers, were never in contention. but Docherty's latest signing, left-back Steward Houston signed from London club Brentford for GBP 50,000 last Saturday, at least made a promising debut.

Alex Stepney, in the United goal, also had fine game. He had already pulled off several memorable saves when, in the 18th minute, Rangers mounted a quick attack and Givens scored with a fierce drive. The second goal, 16 minutes later, came from a setpiece corner -- Stan Bowles heading the ball into the net.

Bowles completed the humiliation of United with an extraordinary goal 20 minutes into the second half. He dummied his way past at least four paralysed United defenders and scored with an angled shot beneath the diving Stepney. Final score: Rangers 3 United 0.

SYNOPSIS: A big Bank Holiday crowd tuned up at Loftus Road on Tuesday to see the London club Queens Park Rangers take on Manchester United. Rangers, playing from right to left, are newcomers to the English first division this season. And they soon showed the sort of attacking football that has made them among the top half-dozen clubs.

Besides good teamwork, Rangers were also showing plenty of individual flair. Here, it's Gerry Francis making a brilliant run ... and bringing an equally fine save from United goalkeeper Alex Stepney.

But even Stepney's courage couldn't prevent Don Givens putting Rangers in the lead after a quarter of an hour.

Rangers went further ahead from a corner on the half-hour. Stan Bowles rose above the Manchester Untied defence to head the goal.

In the second half, now, and Queens Park Rangers still on the attack. Though United manager Tommy Docherty has spent a half-million pounds strengthening his team, his entire defence was mesmerised by Stan Bowles who scored another good goal. Final score -- Rangers three, United nil.

The 1908 FA Charity Shield was the first Charity Shield, a football match contested by the winners of the previous season's Football League and Southern League competitions. The match was played on 27 April 1908 between 1907–08 Football League winners Manchester United and 1907–08 Southern League champions Queens Park Rangers.

The match was played at the neutral venue of Stamford Bridge, London, and ended as a 1–1 draw, goals coming from Billy Meredith for Manchester United and Frank Cannon for Queens Park Rangers.

Since extra time was not played, and penalty shoot-outs did not exist in the early 1900s, the match went to a replay, also at Stamford Bridge. The replay was played four months after the original match, on 29 August 1908, and finished in a 4–0 victory for Manchester United, crowning them as the first ever Charity Shield winners.

Jimmy Turnbull scored a hat-trick for United, the other goal coming from George Wall. The 1908 Charity Shield raised £1,275 for charity and is the only Charity or Community Shield to date to have required a replay.

QPR Report Q&A: Pre-QPR A West Bromwich Albion (WBA) Perspective of WBA and QPR

QPR Report Correspondent, Maudesfishnchips Q&A Offering a WBA Fan Perspective. Many thanks to this week's interviewee.

a big thanks to crazedwbafan18 from http://westbrom.com/forum/index.php#c11

How long have you supported WBA?

Im a relatively new supporter, only joined the bandwagon in the last couple of years

Who are West Brom’s biggest Rival (or Rivals) and why?

It depends on your age, for me it is wolves, but for most of the older folk on here it'd be villa anyday. beating them on their own turf was certainly a great day!

Are you happy with your team and how things are to date? – What are your opinions on your manager Hodgson? His spending/selling this so far?

I'm relatively happy on the team. there were huge fears earlier on with respect to our lack of choice at left back, but so far we have looked defensively astute. Our strikers need to start getting the goals though, as our lack of firepower up front does worry me a bit. having said that, shane long is a great player, with a great workrate. Hodgson is a good manager in fairness, with a lot of experience to his name. he is very defensive minded, making a huge change to di matteo last season, and has changed our style of play massively. it is certainly a gamble, and we are changing our reputation from giant slayers like last season, to ones who are grinding out the wins where they matter.

What do you think of your current Owner? WHY is he involved? What do you expect from him?

Jeremy Peace isnt a flashy man; keeps relatively quiet and doesnt spend highly. i expect more high cash dealss from the man, but we all know that wont happen!

How do you think West Brom treats its fans? Appreciates them? Listens to them? Screws them?

A bit on the expensive side in my opinion, though the whole concessions for students is good. I think there is respect to the fans though, especially by introducing a few games this season where adults can enter for 15 pounds.

Who are you Dangermen/Most valued/most overrated/most underrated players?

Main dangerman lie in long and dorrans when he hits form in my opinion. as for underrated, cant speak highly enough of mulumbu. a great holding midfielder who works his socks off. tchoyi is an interesting character in our squad. has moments of brilliance, and awfulness

Are you happy with your youth set up? Is your club doing enough to bring young/local talent through the ranks?

I am happy with it. We have a lot of potential in players like Berahino and Thorne, who has had first team chances but needs more experience first. I think the youth to first team link up is good, with a great academy down halfords lane.

Who would you say was the greatest Albion player that you yourself personally saw? And past player? (You can name more than one if it's that close!)

Greatest past players lie with the likes of Jeff Astle, Cyrille Regis, and Tony Brown, though im too young to remember them im afraid! Personally though, the best albion player i think ive seen is probably Mulumbu for now, which says a lot! Great player though.

What is your prediction for WBA this season?

Dont like to tempt fate so i dont know haha

What is your view and the general West Brom view of QPR (If we even feature in your consciousness) or of Neil Warnock and our owners?

I think its a decent club to be fair, nice cosey ground. I have respect for Warnock, honest manager and i probably shouldnt say this but i prefer his interviews to hodgsons, seems to say it as it is rather than make excuses(sorry roy!)

Your score prediction for QPR v WBA?

Sneaky away win i hope! 1-2 WBA

What, realistically, do you think WBA are capable of achieving in the next five years?

Premier league stability and a trophy thrown in for good measure hopefully!
